The defiler. The profane. The marquis of snakes. These are the titles attributed to what many consider to be The Conjuring franchise's scariest antagonist. Valak is known to appear in many forms, including the ghost of an old man named Bill Wilkins, incarnation of a nursery rhyme called The Crooked Man and, most famously, The Nun Demon form. Throughout the series, we can learn more about Valak's past through various texts seen on screen, stories passed down from generation to generation and the Warrens' own experiences with Valak detailed in the films. In this video, I'll be analyzing everything we know about Valak, including the ancient ritual used to summon it, it's origins in Romania, the reason it changes forms, it's showdown with sister Irene, the involvement in the Enfield Poltergeist case and finally, it's defeat at the hands of Lorraine Warren. Valak is a demon which disguised itself in the form of a nun as featured in the expanded Conjuring franchise and the more recent prequel to the series, The Nun. Valak in the movies is based off of two separate "real life" influences. The main inspiration is Valac from Ars Goettia, from the grimoire The Lesser Key of Solomon, a spell book that has details on the lore of several supposed supernatural entities. Many of these have appeared in popular fiction like Annabelle, The Conjuring and Hereditary. The other influence comes from Lorraine Warren herself, and in this video I'll explain how James Wan used her experiences to craft this iconic villain. #TheConjuring #TheNun #Valak Chapters 0:00 The Ancient Summoning of Valak 1:02 Intro 1:41 Legends from The Duke of St. Carta 5:32 World War II: The Seal is Broken 6:35 Hunting The Nuns 7:46 The Nun Investigated by The Church 11:39 Possessing Frenchie 15:52 Lorraine's First Vision of Valak 16:11 Undocumented Years 16:33 The Enfield Poltergeist: Infestation 18:10 The Enfield Poltergeist: Oppression 19:17 The Facades of Bill Wilkins and The Crooked Man 25:44 The Enfield Poltergeist: Possession 27:14 Lorraine Sends Condemns Valak Back To Hell 27:53 The Future of Valak --About Horror History-- Horror History is a series that analyses specific characters, monsters, places or events in the fictional worlds of your favorite horror franchises.
